World's largest observation opens |
|
The Singapore Flyer, the world's largest observation wheel, has opened on the island nation of Singapore.
At 165 metres high, the wheel offers fantastic views across the Singapore skyline and also into neighbouring Indonesia and Malaysia.
Costing $180 million (£90 million), the wheel also features restaurants, shops and other facilities at its base.
It exceeds both the London Eye at 135 metres and the Star of Nanchang in China which reaches 160 metres high.
However, it will soon be surpassed by the Great Beijing Wheel which is planned to reach 208 metres when it opens in 2009.
Each air-conditioned capsule on the Singapore Flyer can carry 28 passengers and it takes 30 minutes to complete a full rotation which costs £10.
The final capsule of the wheel was completed in October 2007 and it officially opened to the public on March 1st 2008.
At the opening ceremony Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong told the crowd that the wheel would be "one of the busiest flyers in the world".
“We have a very beautiful city and this is a remarkable view of the city,” he added.
The opening of the wheel has contributed to a 5.7 per cent rise in visitors to Singapore with 908,000 people travelling to the island in March, according to the country's tourist board.
Along with the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix to go ahead in September, Singapore is hoping for further growth in tourism during 2008.
